SATURDAY 6TH OCTOBER SHILDON 3-0 WASHINGTON FA VASE
TEAM: SPENCE, HOWARTH, ANKERS, MASON, HUTTON, GRAYSON, MOORE, EVERITT, MASTERS, NIVEN, EMSON SUBS: COWAN, HALL, JURY, CLOUGH
It was another away day for the Railwaymen, this time Washington stood between them and the next round of the FA VASE. New signings Lewis Hardman and Wayne Clarke were both missing , midfielder Dion Raitt picked up an injury in the pre match warm up so it was a much changed line up from the league win at Northallerton the previous week. Left back Gary Ankers went close in the first minute with a solid header from a corner. The visitors made a strong start to the game and could of took the lead in the 4th minute but Adam Emson's shot was well saved by Lenny French in the Washington goal. Washington began to come more into the game as the first half progressed and not for the first time this season Shildon began to play predictable long balls. Washington had a great chance to take the lead in the 19th minute but somehow Andy Howarth managed to clear the ball away from danger. Veteran striker John Milner then had a even better chance in the 29th minute when he found himself with a clear run at goal, with only Spence to beat Milner spooned the ball way over the bar after an awful bobble. The home side finished the first half much stronger and in all honesty deserved to be in front, but luckily for Shildon both sides went in level at half time.
HALF TIME SHILDON 0-0 WASHINGTON
With a place in the next round of the Vase up for grabs it was Shildon who came out fighting in the second half, Tyson Masters had a decent shot saved by French in the 49th minute. After a great headed flick on by Niven found Moore who in turn played a great ball into the path of Emson , it looked as if Emson would put the visitors into the lead but Emson shot was fluffed and trickled away to safety. The signs were good for Shildon who were beginning to create chances and finally in the 58th minute captain Daniel Moore headed the Railwaymen into the lead after a great cross by Andy Howarth. Moore only had to wait three minutes to grab his second of the game, a good run and cross found Moore unmarked in the box to head home from close range. Washington looked shell shocked and rarely troubled the Shildon back four, John Jury missed a great chance in the 81st minute after some determined work by Tyson Masters . The the clock running down Shildon still pressed for more goals, good play by Cowan and Moore gave Emson a great chance to get on the score sheet in the 88th minute but again his chance went begging. Washington did manage one decent effort in the 89th minute but Spence tipped over. Adam Emson finally got on the score sheet in the last minute when Washington keeper Lenny French failed to cope with a long up field ball, this time the striker made no mistake and cooley smashed the ball home from 15 yards to send Shildon deservedly into the next round of the FA Vase.
